    Orchard Rules

These sanitation, safety, and handling rules apply to all who are working paid and unpaid workers, contractors, and visitors performing work on the Caldwell Idaho Orchard property. These rules must be followed during all work activities on the farm and are reviewed as part of the Safe Quality Food program requirements. At minimum, they are annually formally (verbally) trained and documented. These rules are in place to ensure best practices for food safety, employee safety, and prevention of product contamination. Competency is verified by signature of training recipient during logged hours or via Supervisor and later verified by the farm manager.

    1. Wash hands before going into the orchard and after any activity that could cause contamination (Food breaks, Restroom, etc.)

     2. Immediately notify the supervisor if any hand-washing station is missing water, soap, paper towels, etc.

    3. Don’t leave trash in the orchard. If trash is found, pick it up and dispose of it properly.

    4. Do not wear sandals or jewelry of any kind, including rings (even wedding rings), earrings, necklaces, fake eyelashes, or artificial nails. Disposable gloves are available at all washing stations if necessary.

    5. No smoking or alcohol on farm property.

    6. Food is only allowed in a designated eating area (see map for details) or at vehicles. The only drink allowed in the orchard is water.

    7. Park vehicles only in designated roads or parking areas or outside the orchard.

    8. If you are sick or experiencing symptoms of illness, you must not handle fruit and notify the Supervisor. You may be required to stay home or be reassigned until well.

    9. If you have any open cuts or wounds, they must be cleaned, bandaged, and covered with a clean glove. Notify the Supervisor immediately. If any fruit becomes contaminated, report it so corrective action can be taken.

    10. During harvest, any fruit dropped on the ground, leave it. Do not place in a harvest bin.

    11. Do not use dirty or contaminated bins. If a bin contains leaves, old fruit, or debris, clean and sanitize it before use or notify the Supervisor.

    12. First aid kits are available at all wash stations, with a Supervisor, in the Ranch 1 shop and the Ranch 2 packing shed.

    13. All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported to the Supervisor immediately.

    14. Report any animals or unidentified persons to the Supervisor.

    15. Wear proper equipment for each job, such as a harness for the platform machine, etc.

    16. If you believe you have been exposed to any agricultural chemicals, report it immediately to the Supervisor and follow your training/Safety Data Sheets (SDS) instructions. Decontamination kits are available at wash stations and farm vehicles.

    17. The central posting location for spray records and SDS is in the cafeteria. Chemical applications are not conducted within 100 feet of work areas, and Supervisors are notified of all spray activities.

    18. Follow all ladder and equipment safety training. The Supervisor will monitor work practices and ensure tasks are performed safely. Additional training will be provided before new tasks begin. Repeated refusal to follow safety procedures may result in removal from the worksite.

    19.  If you are using gloves or bandanas, they must be cleaned and washed daily. They may not be placed on the ground or fruit. Any glove that contacts the ground may not be used to handle fruit.

    20. Treat everyone with respect. If there is harassment of any kind, report it to the Supervisor. Examples of harassment: verbal abuse, body language, physical abuse, sexist language, or inappropriate jokes. Continued behavior may result in removal from the worksite.

    21. The Supervisor represents management in the orchard and is responsible for communicating instructions, enforcing safety and food safety rules, and escalating concerns to management. Questions or concerns should be directed to the Supervisor, who will communicate with management as needed.
